Taking the Girls to Their First Concert: Katy Perry, Glitter, and All 🎤✨

TL;DR If you are debating taking your 5 year old to a concert....DO IT!

We took the girls to their very first concert and Katy Perry made it a night to remember 🎤💫 From gummy bears to belting out “Roar” like tiny pop stars-this was peak core memory status. 💕🎆

When my husband and I saw Imagine Dragons in the fall, I could not believe how many kids were there…and we said the next concert J&K were coming. The room was full of Moms and Daughters and the girl vibes were strong….almost as strong as the coffee I needed the following day because we didn’t get home til after midnight.

Taking your kids to their first concert is a core memory kind of event. And when that concert includes neon wigs, bubble guns, and fireworks? You go full-in. We surprised the girls with tickets to see Katy Perry, their first-ever live concert. And honestly? It was one of the most chaotic, sparkly, emotional nights of motherhood so far.

We’ve had Katy Perry on repeat in the car for years. “Roar” is their anthem. “Firework” is their feel-it-in-your-chest song. And “California Gurls”? Let’s just say that one turns the backseat into a toddler dance floor.

So when I saw that Katy Perry was coming to LA (and to a smaller venue than many other concerts, I knew we had to go. We stalked tickets for a few weeks until we found a good price in a desirable seat (definitely harder than it sounds).

Getting Ready: The Pre-Show Chaos

If someone could explain to me why a 7pm concert starts at 8:50pm, that would be great - but at least we knew that in advance. We got the girls to nap (yes, SLEEP for ~75 minutes the day of the show) and arrived to the venue and planned to get inside around the time the opening act started at 7:45pm.

I brought bottled water in for everyone, yes, that is typically allowed...and smuggled a package of gummy bears in my bra (that I legitimately think they are going to laugh about for years).

The Moment the Lights Went Down

When the show started and Katy walked out on stage, their jaws actually dropped. They stood on their seats, wide-eyed and frozen...the music, the lights, and ALL the people around them singing...was a very new experience.

Kids see concerts differently. They weren’t analyzing set lists or stage effects. They were just in it, spinning to the music and singing with absolutely zero shame. It was loud. It was overstimulating. But it was magical. They didn’t know all the songs. They didn’t care. They felt the energy. And seeing it through their eyes made me fall in love with live music all over again.

Worth the Late Bedtime

Yes, they were up WAY past bedtime (we didn't get home until after midnight). Yes, traffic was a beast leaving, and we all woke up with hoarse voices....but they woke up the next morning still humming "Teenage Dream" and asking when we can go again.

That night will live rent-free in my mom heart forever.
